Preschool & Early Childhood

Big questions deserve a big faith.

Three, four, and five-year-olds are among the most naturally theological people we know. They ask about God with unguarded curiosity. They wonder about fairness and love and what happens when things go wrong. They are, as Jesus suggested, closer to the kin-dom of God than most of us realize.

Our preschool and early childhood ministry is designed to meet children right where they are — with play, story, wonder, and the patient company of caring adults who take their questions seriously. We want every child who comes through our doors to leave knowing that God loves them, that they belong here, and that faith is something alive and worth exploring.

— Matthew 19:14 | "Let the children come to me; do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kin-dom of heaven belongs."

Curriculum

Big Faith: growing a faith as big as their imagination

We use Big Faith from Cokesbury — a thoughtfully designed, age-appropriate curriculum that introduces children to the basics of the Christian faith through Bible stories, hands-on activities, and child-friendly themes that connect to their everyday lives.

Each year of Big Faith is organized around four seasonal themes, giving children a broad and balanced foundation for understanding who God is, what it means to belong to a community of faith, and how their faith calls them to act in the world.

Fall

Faith in God

Winter

Faith in Community

Spring

Faith in Jesus

Summer

Faith in Action

Each session invites children to explore a Bible story, engage with it through storytelling and activities, and reflect on what it means for their own lives. The curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and make faith tangible — not just something children hear about, but something they begin to practice and claim as their own.

Our Team

Experienced, caring leadership

Our preschool program is led by a trained early childhood professional with decades of experience creating inclusive, nurturing environments where young children thrive. She works alongside dedicated volunteers who share her commitment to the whole child — body, mind, and spirit.

Chyrlette Crump
Early Childhood & Preschool Coordinator

Miss Chyrlette (pronounced SHER-let) brings over 35 years of early childhood experience to First Baptist, including her role as Director at Easter Seals Child Development Center in Washington, DC. She holds a Master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education and has deep expertise in building volunteer teams, establishing safety protocols, and creating inclusive environments where every child can flourish. As a Baptist herself, Chyrlette brings not only professional excellence but a genuine love for nurturing children within a community of faith.

For Families

What to expect when you arrive

Drop-off is designed to be easy and warm. When you arrive at Children's Room #2, a staff member will welcome your child, collect any items you'd like to leave, and note any instructions or special needs. We use a simple check-in process to ensure every child's safety throughout the morning.

If your child needs you at any point during worship, we will come find you. We want you to feel free to be fully present in the service, confident that your little one is engaged, cared for, and having a great time.

First time visiting with a preschooler? Come a few minutes early. We love meeting new families, and we'll make sure your child feels comfortable and excited before you head into worship.

Safety

Your child's safety is our priority

Every staff member and regular volunteer in our children's ministry has completed a background check and received training in our child safety policies. We follow safe-church practices throughout all of our ministry spaces and are committed to maintaining an environment where every child is protected, respected, and cared for with the highest standards of integrity.

Detailed information about our child safety policies is available upon request through the church office.
