Position Description – Executive Pastor
The Executive Pastor is a spiritual leader of the church who assists the Senior Pastor in programs of spiritual mission and ministry to the community served by The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington D.C. The Executive Pastor is a regular leader of worship as well as other spiritual and fellowship activities. The Executive Pastor possesses a hopeful, vibrant vision of what the Church can be and do in the world. As the person responsible for the day-to-day business affairs of First Baptist Church, the Executive Pastor ensures that the systems of the church (financial, physical and operational systems) serve and support the mission of the church.
This is a full-time, exempt position based at the church under the direct supervision of the Senior Pastor. Flexibility with respect to time and location are at the discretion of the Senior Pastor.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Executive Pastor works under the direction of and in support of the ministry of the Senior Pastor in the following areas:
Executive Ministry to the congregation, staff and community to provide continuity in multiple aspects of church management to ensure implementation of the church’s vision and mission
Functions as Chief of Staff supporting the Senior Pastor and Moderator in the day to day operations of FBC and assists in the supervision of FBC’s administrative and support staff
Oversees the church’s finances and reports results to the church, in coordination with the Church Treasurer, Stewardship Committee, and other financial leadership.
Manages the use, maintenance, and security of the church’s physical plant
Works with other church staff, the Personnel Committee, and outside vendors to manage the church’s Human Resources function including:
Ensuring compliance with Federal and local legal requirements
Applying best contemporary practices in maintaining the church’s personnel records
Implementing the church’s Employee handbook and other employment policies
Takes an active role in the mission, ministry and leadership of the whole church
Assists the Senior Pastor in leading mission and ministry initiatives by:
Developing concepts and plans
Proposing new programs and ministry initiatives (including scope, benefits and resources)
Managing the implementation of approved programs and ministry initiatives
Directing the day-to-day operation of assigned programs and ministry initiatives
Reporting to the Senior Pastor on the status of all programs and ministry initiatives
Works to ensure that the spiritual needs of member constituencies are properly cared for including teaching and visiting the sick
Works to ensure the smooth transition between existing and new programs and ministry initiatives
Collaborates with the Senior Pastor, Ministers and lay leaders within the church to ensure the coordination and implementation of church activities
Has direct oversight accountability for the relationships and contracts the church maintains with outsourced service providers, particularly in the areas of financial and building administration
Participates in worship leadership as scheduled
Functions as Pastor-on-Duty as assigned
Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor
Essential Job Functions:
Ensures that the systems and operations of the church support the mission of the church
Functions independently to oversee the work of others with minimum of direct supervision
Effectively communicates complex thoughts, ideas and concepts to others
Develops and maintains good interpersonal relationship with others both within and outside the church
Provides executive-level management oversight for multiple complex program initiatives throughout the church
Leads worship services and other church activities
Travels both locally and overnight on church business
Minimum Position Requirements:
Graduate-level Degree or equivalent from an accredited School of Divinity
Demonstrable skill and extensive experience in executive-level management oversight of complex programs and ministry initiatives throughout the church
Demonstrable skill and experience leading worship services
Demonstrable skill and experience with contemporary communication technologies
Ability to pass a standard background and credit check
Experience in the Baptist tradition
Project management experience
Ordination as a Minister
