On Sunday, September 18, 2011, the class began a study of Mark, the Evangelist.  This book was chosen because Mark is featured during the Lectionary Year.  We will use 2 books: (1) Reading Mark, Engaging the Gospel by David Rhoads, Professor of New Testament at Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago; and (2) The Power of Mark’s Story by Mitzi L. Minor, Associate Professor of New Testament at Memphis Theological Seminary, Memphis, Tennessee. Class members are encouraged to volunteer to lead a class discussion during the 12 to 15 week sessions.

Building on the principle that Church School is the second step in the disciple-making process, as well as moving believers toward spiritual maturity, our primary resource materials are the scripturally-based study guides published by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.  Dr. DeVries supplements the lesson materials with PowerPoint displays, and his own keen insights on such vital issues as the Great Commission, power of prayer, and the importance of Christian ministry.  Class members are prone to vigorous discussions on any given topic, which indicates an enormous interest in scripture, and scripture-related issues.  An open invitation exists to those who want the experience of learning in a warm and inviting atmosphere.  No age requirement.
