The FBC Organ Project

As it marks its 210th year in the District of Columbia, The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington DC is embarking on an exciting new chapter in its distinguished ministry of music. In 2011, FBC started working with Austin Organ Company of Hartford, Connecticut to install a world class organ that will be unique in the Washington area. Construction has begun, and is expected to be complete in spring 2013.

In recent years, many congregations across America have abandoned their organs in favor of contemporary worship. But at First Baptist, we have always favored a worship style that keeps us rooted in the great musical traditions that continue to prove a meaningful profession of our faith. In 2008, First Baptist affirmed its support for the “beauty, reverence, and excellence of the worship we offer to God and the place in which we do it.” The organ project is the church’s way of taking that concept and making it real.

The organ project also represents a fulfillment of the original vision for First Baptist’s home at 16th and O Streets, NW. When the current sanctuary was constructed in 1955, the plans included space for a large new organ. Unfortunately, funding for this instrument did not materialize, leading the church to re-install the previous 1948 organ in the new building.

With this new organ, we are finally bringing the dreams of our predecessors in the church to life. As a commitment to the great musical traditions of the church, as a significant investment in the future of a landmark urban congregation, as a commitment to enduring ministry, the organ project is a leap of faith.
