At the annual church meeting on May 19, 1982, the congregation of the First Baptist Church adopted a motion presented by Mrs. Elizabeth Turner, to establish The First Baptist Church Child Care Center as a ministry of the church. The Center was started with advice from George Washington University and the late church member Alvin West, who was an attorney
The Child Care Center opened on September 7, 1982. At the time, the Center was only one of three in the Washington area that cared for infants as young as six weeks. In 1989, First Baptist and the Child Care Center received national recognition when they were featured in an article in The New York Times acknowledging their pioneering work in providing year-long children's day care as a service to the urban community.
In 1999, the name was changed to the Child Development Center of the First Baptist Church.
From the Chancel, from the balcony, every Sunday the harmonious voices of the First Baptist Church Music Program bring blessing and inspiration to us through music. Led by our Associate Pastor for Music, unsurpassed organist, and illustrious Kapellmeister, Lawrence P. Schreiber, the choir is a mixed team of professional vocalists and regular churchgoers, all lovers of God, neighbor, and good music. Their repertoire covers a wide range of song from every period in history, from classics and hymns to contemporary spirituals and praise-worship.
